India launched a precision military response under Operation Sindoor, targeting multiple Pakistani air defence units, including a key installation in Lahore, after Pakistan attempted drone and missile attacks on 15 Indian military locations in the north and west. The Indian Ministry of Defence confirmed that the response was in the same domain and intensity as Pakistan’s aggression and that an air defence system in Lahore was successfully neutralised.
On the night of May 7-8, Pakistan reportedly attempted to strike Indian military positions in Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj using drones and missiles. The Ministry of Defence stated that these attacks were neutralised by India’s Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems. Recovery of debris is underway across various sites and, according to the ministry, confirms the attempted strikes from Pakistan.
In retaliation, Indian armed forces carried out targeted strikes on Pakistani air defence infrastructure, using advanced drone capabilities. According to sources, Israeli-developed HAROP kamikaze drones were deployed, and damage was inflicted on Pakistan’s Chinese-origin HQ-9 missile systems. Explosions were reported in Lahore and Karachi, and India confirmed the neutralisation of a major air defence unit in Lahore. The operation was described as proportionate and measured, with military establishments in Pakistan not being targeted beyond air defence sites.
The Ministry of Defence added that Pakistan had increased the intensity of firing across the Line of Control, using mortars and heavy artillery in Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar, and Rajouri sectors in Jammu and Kashmir. As per the statement, sixteen civilians, including three women and five children, were killed due to Pakistani firing. India responded with fire to halt the cross-border shelling.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan reviewed the overall security situation following these developments. Security forces across India conducted high-alert mock drills on Wednesday. The Defence Ministry reiterated, "Indian Armed Forces reiterate their commitment to non-escalation, provided it is respected by the Pakistani military."
